Ornamental Woodland Garden
This ornamental woodland-inspired garden fuses horticulture and ecology into the landscape design. My plant choices reflect the desires of my client, while also incorporating my ecological expertise to the project.
The colour palette filled the space with fuschia pink, white, peach and crimson red. The foreground is rhododendrons and azaleas. The background is white and mugo pine, which naturally adds acidity to the soil that the rhododendrons need. I added a touch of rose and astilbe for seasonal texture.
I chose an edging of Scottish Heather to remind my client of her Celtic heritage. In addition, I added eastern red columbine, Canada anenome, and high bush blueberries to bring a little piece of Nova Scotia (where my client grew up) to her new home in Copenhagen, Denmark.
There are strawberry groundcover plants, and white lupins to add nitrogen to the soil system. The main specimen tree is a gorgeous Magnolia ‘Daphne’ to frame the design. When we chose the tree we thought it would be white. However, now that it has found its new home- we were all delighted at its elegant yellow petals! It never ceases to amaze me how even in a planned design, there are surprises — Nature's gifts.
