Fundy Cliff Hangers
An Innovative Living Wall Concept for Coastal Erosion Control on the Minas Basin, Nova Scotia
Dispatches in the Field Award Submission 2020
I can vividly remember that day in March, getting off the subway in downtown Toronto, with barely a car in sight. The atmosphere felt apocalyptic. From that moment onwards, I knew the arrival of COVID-19 would impact our world. That day, I was called upon to return home to Nova Scotia post haste. I didn't know I was about to enter the "Atlantic Bubble" for the next foreseeable future. The bubble forced me to focus on what I had directly in front of me.
While continuing my studies in Ecological Restoration at UVic that summer, a more in-depth exploration of climatic changes to the landscape began and continues to grow. Restoring ecosystems and helping our communities understand their ecological importance is exciting and essential work that needs to be done.
Sea-level rise has become an increasingly concerning matter to address in conjunction with eroding coastlines. I can only hope that my work helps create a restorative ecological effect on our beautiful slice of earthly heaven on the Bay of Fundy.
Most importantly, I remembered how important family, community and healthy environments play a vital role in all life—remembering to enjoy the smallest of things— my silver-lining.
I'm looking forward to continuing my research and passions here on the mudflats. I thought the name Fundy Cliff Hanger was appropriate since we live in such precarious times. I have to give my mom credit for the creative title, however. Thanks, Mom!
I hope you all will enjoy viewing my continuous journey of co-creating with nature.
